Epiphany
I experienced a sort of an epiphany this year.
Somehow, sometime this year, I got into an argument on religion with some of my primary school friends. One of the questions they threw at me was why I was so certain that the Genesis account of creation is true. Stumped, I consulted my Sunday School teacher who gave me a bookmark with the words “God said it, I believe it, and that settles it”, and prayed with me.
By adult standards that would be a hardly satisfactory answer. But what she said (her name is Irene, sadly we lost touch after my family left to join another church) inspired me to want to understand the Bible better. This prompted me to read between 4 to 6 chapters from the Bible everyday – a mix of chapters from the Old and New Testament. I completed it within a year which, as far as I’m aware, is quite an unusual thing for a kid to do.
Postscript (August 2005)
Since 1987 it has been my habit to read the Bible almost everyday. Unlike reading the entire encyclopaedia, reading the Bible has not made me smarter or transformed me into some child genius (think geeky or freaky Singapore brainiest kids). However, I’ve found in this amazing book, more than anyone or anything else, inspiration for and purpose to life.
